Asus has officially presented the ROG Phone 7 along with the 7 Ultimate model. The smartphones are packed with new functions and with the devices the manufacturer focuses on the mobile gamer.
Asus ROG Phone 7 official: flashy and high-end
Manufacturer Asus releases devices in dribs and drabs, but when they do, it concerns smartphones that are slightly different. Now the Asus ROG Phone 7 has been presented, a device that stands out in several areas. For example, we already see a striking appearance, where you can choose from two colors: black and white. On the back you can find, among other things, an RGB LED strip that can display millions of colors, for example with an incoming notification.
Under the hood is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor assisted up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. Thanks to software, you can assign certain apps, games or tasks to the fast cores of the processor, so that everything runs more smoothly. On the inside there is a good dissipation of heat that arises during the game. For example, we see a new one vapor chamber and plates of graphite to dissipate the heat.
Smooth screen, improved cameras
The screen has a diagonal of 6.78 inches and offers a Full HD resolution. The maximum refresh rate is 165Hz, with which Asus is a forerunner. It is a colorful amoled panel with a high contrast. The refresh rate can be set per game, so you can choose how smoothly everything should run.
There are renewed stereo speakers on board, both pointing forward for the ultimate experience. There is also spatial audio for headphones. The main camera has a resolution of 50 megapixels. The well-known IMX766 sensor from Sony is used for this, which we know from the Oppo Find X5 Pro or OnePlus 10T, among others. For selfies, use the 32-megapixel front camera that is hidden in a hole in the screen. There are also a wide-angle sensor and camera in front close ups found on the device.
Large battery, scanty update policy
The battery consists of two cells with a total capacity of 6000 mAh. It can be charged with a maximum of 65 watts. Asus supplies the device with Android 13 with its own shell. The manufacturer will come with two Android updates in the future and will roll out security updates for four years. In 2023, that is very scant, especially in this price segment.
Finally, the software has various options aimed at the mobile gamer. For example, you can set to see pop-ups while gaming to make better choices. There are also ‘air triggers’ on board, which you can use while gaming. For example, you accelerate, make a somersault or start shooting.
Finally, you can work with ‘vibration mapping’. With this you select a certain part of the screen and if you tap on it, the device will vibrate according to a set pattern. You can combine that with, for example, virtual buttons to accelerate or jump.
Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is the ultimate flagship
Then there is also the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate that has everything on board that the normal model also offers. This model is available in a color scheme and contains a second display on the back, useful for incoming notifications and additional information.
The 7 Ultimate is also equipped with the Aeroactive Portal system, or a physical door that is placed in the device. This allows cold air to flow in and the warm air to be blown away. To make full use of that, Asus offers several optionally available accessories. For example, there is the Aeroactive Cooler 7 with built-in speakers and LEDs, headphone jack, physical buttons to use while gaming and built-in fan.
Price and availability Asus ROG Phone 7 (Ultimate)
The devices can be ordered immediately via the webshop of Asus itself, but when they will be delivered is still the question. The ROG Phone 7 with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage costs 999 euros. The 16GB/512GB model costs 1199 euros. The ROG 7 Ultimate will only be available with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The suggested retail price for that model is 1399 euros.
