With the Chromecast with Google TV (HD), Google releases an affordable streaming dongle, after it previously introduced the ‘normal’ Chromecast with Google TV.

The new streaming device is cheaper and therefore seems to be an interesting option. But which Chromecast should you have? In this article we list the three main differences.

1. Full HD instead of 4K

If you’re in doubt between the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) and the Chromecast from 2020, there’s really only one question to ask yourself: do I want to stream movies, series and YouTube videos in 4K quality, or is full HD? (1080p) also fine? The image quality is by far the most important difference between the two Chromecasts.

If you have a nice 4K TV at home and find it important that you can watch movies and series in the highest possible quality, then you should have the Chromecast with Google TV from 2020. If your television is a bit older or if you are fine with streaming movies and series in full HD, you can also opt for the cheaper Chromecast.

Streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max offer the necessary titles that are streamed in 4K. However, it is also the case that many films and series are on the platforms in 1080p. You can clearly see the difference in image quality, but of course only if your television can handle 4K.

2. Runs on latest software

Another difference is that the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) runs on newer software. The operating system is based on Android 12, while the 4K version of the Chromecast still has to do with Android 10. In practice you will not notice it very much, but it is of course a plus.

The Chromecast with Google TV (4K) is still being updated to Android 12. Google has announced that the update will not be long in coming, but the exact release date is unclear. As soon as more is known about this, you will of course read it here.

3. The price

As mentioned, the HD version of the Chromecast with Google TV is a lot cheaper. You pay for the device 39.99 euros while the Chromecast with 4K support for 69 euros goes over the counter. Both streaming devices are available at many Dutch web stores and are immediately available.
