Qualcomm accelerates the pace to fill the high-end of smartphones in 2023, after the official announcement of the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor last week. At that launch event, a series of collaborations between builders to implement this 4-nanometer chip were announced, and a brand has taken the first step before the end of the month: vivo has presented its new X90 Pro+ with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

The equipment, very similar to the wonderful X80 Pro that we reviewed, appears in showcases since December 6 in China at about 6,499 yuan – 910 dollars at the US exchange rate -, and is the tip of the “X90” trio that the Chinese brand presents. Unlike the Pro+ model, the standard and Pro feature the Mediatek Dimensity 9200 chip under the chassis.

In this case, we have a 3200 x 1440p OLED panel and 120 hertz refresh rate, accompanied by 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, along with a 4700 mAh battery that charges at 80W. In addition, it repeats the winning formula in cameras with Zeiss with a 48MP main lens; wide angle of 50 MP and a telephoto of up to 100X of zoom.

During the Snapdragon Summit 2022, Qualcomm allowed us to have a closed session to find out the benchmark of the new Gen 2, and we had the chance to run several tests and measure the power of the chip.

In a computer designed by Qualcomm, and using GeekBench and PCMark to measure performance, we obtained a result of 1494 in single core and 5139 in multi core.

In terms of temperature control, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 stayed between 33 and 35 degrees in the PCMark test, obtaining between 33 and 105 frames per second.

In these measurements, the equipment did not suffer intense battery drops or sudden increases in temperature. However, it did maintain some hot spots in the part near the cameras.

If we take the reference of our measurements with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the previous version of Qualcomm processors, we are talking about a considerable improvement in multi-core up to a thousand points, while in single core it remains 100 points away. This trend is replicated if we compare Gen 1 at the beginning of 2022 with its 1,253 single-core and 3,411 multi-core.

There is no official announcement of new devices with this integrated, but Qualcomm works with all brands of Android smartphones. In addition to having an agreement signed with Samsung for several years, the Californian firm is a supplier to companies such as Motorola, Nubia, Honor, Redmi and many others.

So far, it is taken for granted that this chip will be integrated into Samsung’s future S23 line, the Xiaomi 13, the Magic 5 series from Honor, the X40 or Edge 40 from Motorola, the expected REDMAGIC 8, the FindX range from Oppo and others that have high-end Android devices.
